Radio Frequency cy IDentification (RFID) is a wireless data collection technology that uses small electronic tags to store data which can be read remotely by a reader.

The tags contain minitiarized electronic circuitry and antennae coils to enable them to communicate via radio frequencies with RFID readers. The readers collect data from the tags and provide it to computer platforms where it can be processed into useful information for a variety of purposes. Because of their small size and ability to store and report data, RFID tags can be attached to a wide range of physical assets, creating a dynamic link between people, objects and processes. RFID is increasingly becoming a familiar part of our lives, both at work and at home.

Generally, an RFID solution set comprises the following key elements:

IMAGE Hardware, which includes tags, readers, writers, servers, controllers and cabling.

IMAGE Software and interfaces for integration to back-end and legacy applications.

IMAGE Enhancement of legacy applications to sustain and extend the value RFID can provide.
IMAGE

Consider these factors when evaluating AbsoluteSKY

IMAGEWhy use RFID?
The case for implementing RFID technology is compelling: RFID tags store more information than magnetic strips or bar codes, which must be brought close to a scanner for reading, and the data stored on the tags can be easily and automatically exchanged at a distance both indoors and outdoors, even through obscuration such as rain and snow. In fact, RFID data can be read through the human body, clothing and non-metallic materials.

With these advantages, RFID systems are finding applications just about anywhere, from clothing tags to amusement parks to pet and livestock tags to waste management -- anywhere that a unique identification system is needed.

IMAGERFID Evolution or Revolution?
RFID technology has been around for decades… so why is the technology getting so much attention now? It’s because RFID and its adjacent technologies have progressively converged to the point that RFID is now seen by industry specialists as leading the next major stage in the evolution of information technology itself!

In the past, each stage has brought disruption and change, but RFID uniquely builds upon what came before it. RFID technology has become cheaper, faster and more capable in terms of storing and transferring data, but RFID-based solutions can now draw upon the Internet as a means to share the data. It can interface with state-of-the-art enterprise systems to manage the data and turn it into information that can be acted upon. In turn, it can trigger enterprise resource planning software and enterprise applications to run organizations in an entirely new and dramatically more efficient way.

While evolutionary in its development, RFID now promises to revolutionize the world's supply chain, for example replacing the ubiquitous bar code on product packaging. It will change the way suppliers and customers interact, allowing both to, among other things, know at any given moment where shipped goods are located, tracking them through every stage of manufacturing and transport, and to the point of sale itself.

IMAGEThe Upside of RFID
In business environments, interest in RFID technology is driven by the need for companies to achieve greater speed and visibility into their supply chains, with the goal of increasing their operational efficiency and levels of customer satisfaction.

An RFID-enabled supply chain operation ensures that goods can be delivered to the place and at the time consumers are ready to purchase –creating tremendous upside in terms of lower inventory levels, reduced labor costs, improved markdowns, loss prevention and increased sales - the bottom line: increased profitability and happier customers.
